Early menstruation: a public health issue

📉 A trend confirmed by science

A meta-analysis of more than 71,000 American women born between 1950 and 2005 reveals that the average age of menarche has decreased from 12.5 to 11.9 years for the most recent generations. Today, nearly 16% of girls experience menarche before the age of 11, and some even as early as 9 or younger.

🧬 Medium and long-term risks

A Brazilian study presented at the Endocrine Society in 2025 shows that women who started menstruating before the age of 10 have an increased risk of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and obstetric complications such as pre-eclampsia. Those who experienced late menarche (over 15 years of age) have a lower risk of obesity but irregular cycles and increased cardiac fragility.

Why this trend is worrying: nutrition, environment and hormones

Early puberty, mainly linked to high BMI, inflammatory diet or exposure to endocrine disruptors, is becoming increasingly common.

According to the study, the decrease in the age of menstruation is correlated with a rich and unbalanced diet from childhood. A better diet appears to delay menarche, which helps to limit risk factors. Among the suspected causes are also early exposure to endocrine disruptors (pesticides, plastics, hormonal pollutants) which promote early puberty. These environmental and nutritional factors exacerbate health risks later in life, highlighting the importance of taking action from childhood.
